Ulva Hostel – Spring is here!!

And the final push to get everything ready for re-opening Ulva Hostel later this month. Back at the end of October, it always seems that there’s plenty of time to get all the jobs done, but there never is – especially with the weather playing its part – but we think we’ve done well this winter and got most things done now.

Whitetail Yurt at Ulva hostel in late February sunshine and Ulva Hostel in the background.

Just have two quad bikes to repair – one has been in the barn on Gometra since Christmas as there’s more wrong with it than right with it – and a RIB to sort out that was flooded on the pontoon a few weeks back.

Poorly Honda quad bike having almost everything repaired or replaced. Amazingly tough machines and the true workhorses of Ulva and Gometra, but even these eventually suffer due to the rough tracks.

ACFA – Association of Certificated Field Archaeologists (now known as Field Archaeology for All : Arc-eòlas do na h-uile) – have just left after having spent a week surveying the archaeology on the eastern side of Ulva and although they weren’t staying at Ulva Hostel, I spent time transporting them around the island and helping a little bit, poking and prodding at possible archaeological features.

A possible bit of archaeology on the western side of Ulva at Glacnangallon, overlooking Dun Ban. Possibly a faint hut circle/roundhouse similar to one found beneath Tigh nan Duine at the other end of Am Bru on Gometra. (I’ve only driven past this a few thousand times before I saw it!)
