How to get to the Hostel

  • Getting to the Hostel
    • The Hostel is exactly one mile from the slipway on Ulva and takes around 20-25 minutes to walk along a rough track. Simply follow the signs from ‘Hostel & Yurts’ from just past the Boathouse and Sheila’s Cottage.
    • Kit transport to the hostel is available to the hostel for £30, but large groups wanting kit transport should contact us for a separate price.
    • The Ulva ferry runs on request from 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday and on Sundays from June until the end of August.
    • If you are going out on one of the boat trips organised by Turus Mara from the pontoon at Ulva Ferry, some trips return after the Ulva ferry finishes for the day, but normally Turus Mara are happy to drop guests across to Ulva at the end of their trips.
  • Getting to Mull
    • There are three ferry services to Mull:
      • Oban to Craignure: This is the busiest and requires booking well in advance, sometimes months in advance
      • Lochaline to Fishnish: A turn-up-and-go ferry, that is a useful option to get on and of Mull if you haven’t been able to catch a ferry from Oban or Craignure but isn’t an option for guests without a car, as it can’t be reached by public transport.
      • Kilchoan to Tobermory: Only a choice if you are coming to Mull via the Ardnamurchan Peninsula as it is a long way from Oban.
    • Oban is the most convenient departure port for Mull because of its transport links to Glasgow via car, train and bus, but it is a busy route and in the summer months spaces will be booked up well in advance.
  • Getting to Ulva Ferry
    • From Craignure on Mull, it is around one hour to drive to Ulva Ferry and only slightly less if crossing from Lochaline to Fishnish on Mull
    • From Salen, it is a single tracked road, so give yourself time to drive that bit of the route.
    • There is plenty of parking at Ulva Ferry, but it can be busy during the peak season with cars for people visiting Ulva and/or heading out on the boat trips from the pontoon.
    • If coming by car, we suggest that you ignore the first large car park on the Ulva Ferry road and carry on down towards the pier. Just before the garage buildings, turn up a short ramp on your left hand side. This is the car park for guests and visitors to Ulva. If that car park is full, feel free to retrace your steps back to the first large car park and use that for your stay.
    • The public bus service from Craignure doesn’t run to Ulva Ferry, but you can catch the Tobermory bus as far as Salen but you will also need to have organiised the Ulva Ferry Community Transport to pick you up from Salen.
    • The Ulva Ferry Community Transport runs a scheduled service between the ferry port at Craignure and Ulva Ferry during the season, but booking is essential. They can be contacted through their website at Ulva Ferry Community Transport
